The Helwan Japanese garden was donated by the city of Tokyo to Cairo as a symbol of the partnership and goodwill between the two cities. It is constructed in a courtyard of the Sixth of October Garden, a memorial park commemorating the outbreak of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

 

Based on the Edo-Daimyo style, the garden is planned around an existing pond and incorporates extensive lawns into the space as requested by the Cairo government.  An entrance gate, arbor, bridge, stone arrangements and Nobedan styled stone paths are characteristic features of the garden. After an extensive search stone that would be suitable for a Japanese garden was sourced in the Sinai Penninsula for use in the garden.
