CULTURAL LANDSCAPE PRESERVATION AND IMPROVEMENT PLAN Sakuragawa city, Ibaragi-ken, Japan

While the city of Sakuragawa is surrounded by rich countryside and natural environment, its city center is concentrated in a very limited area where there exist a number of unique buildings registered within the Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.

Due to a challenged local economy interest in private sector participation in landscape planning for the area was high, so TLA prepared a specific plan for cultural landscape preservation and improvement that would enhance the local residents’ interests and understanding of their own landscape. Rather than imposing a specific design proposal the plan was produced as a user-friendly document that would appeal to all citizens and stakeholders using a philosophy that the regional landscape was created and sustained by a combination of the community’s unique lifestyle and continuous traditions.
