HIGO-HOSOKAWA GARDEN, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo

The site of Higo-Hosogawa Garden was originally part of the residence of the feudal lord Hosokawa during the Edo Period and contained a classic Japanese garden. Over time the beauty of the garden itself began to disappear as the site became surrounded by intensive development and a modern-day recreation park. In order to revive appreciation of the site’s history while upgrading the recreation value of the park a new plan based on rigorous historical research was prepared for the renovation of the garden.

The planning process required a collaborative effort with administrators of all surrounding facilities through a series of design charrettes, interviews and other public input.
