FUKUSHOIN TEMPLE GARDEN, Tokyo

Located on the outskirts of Tokyo, Fukushoin temple has a history spanning more than 600 years. In 2015 the temple buildings were rebuilt and the grounds redesigned and renovated, including the vestibule, inner gardens, and garden of the chief priest.

The main viewing garden, or inner garden, is designed primarily as a place of meditation and respite during a Buddhist memorial service or for prayer, and uses elements such as Shumi-Mountain, Tsuru-Island, Kame-island, and Sanzonseki. Careful selection of natural materials and meticulous arrangement of planting, stones, and gravel enabled the garden to display the tranquil character of the temple.
